Using Interactive Radio to Promote Effective Citizen Engagement for Sustainable Agriculture and Development in Western Kenya.
September 15, 2019The Solidarity Initiative for Refugees (SIR) is conducting digital training programs aimed at equipping youth from both refugee and host communities in Kakuma with skills to access employment opportunities.
To better understand the specific training needs of these communities, People Centered Solutions (PCS) partnered with radios Ata Nayeche, Bibilia Husema –Kakuma, Atoo Sifa, and Ref FM to run interactive radio shows and engaged young people in listening groups across the communities in Kakuma.

Our Approach
Through the citizen engagement process, PCS collected data through multiple sources, including interactive radio shows, on-ground forums, listening groups, and social media platforms. The data collected included both qualitative and quantitative data, such as opinions, feedback, and demographic information.
PCS used mixed methods analysis to analyze the data collected from the different sources. For example, they used content analysis to identify key themes and patterns in the qualitative data, and descriptive statistics to summarize the quantitative data. They also used triangulation, which involves comparing and contrasting data from different sources to ensure the validity and reliability of the findings.
The feedback received from the young people helped inform SIR's training programs to better meet the needs of both the host and refugee communities in Kakuma. Overall, the collaboration between PCS and SIR is an excellent example of how citizen engagement can inform and enhance the effectiveness of programs aimed at providing support and opportunities to marginalized communities.
